Notes on Installation

Dimensions and Mounting
-----------------------
The GoDrive 80S differs only in terms of drive height @ 18.8mm
0.2mm, with the side mounting holes remaining 3.0mm 0.2mm from the
drive bottom. The GoDrive 40/80S can be mounted in any orientation.
Maximum screw penetration is 3 mm with three minimum penetration of
three full threads, and with application of torque to these screws
limited to 120 inch-ounces. If the bottom mounting holes are used,
the surface to which the GoDrive is affixed must have a flatness of
0.127mm (0.005 inches) or better.

Ventilation
-----------
GoDrive 40/80 S hard disk drives operate without a cooling fan,
provided the ambient air temperature does not exceed 55*C (131*F).
Any user-designed cabinet must provide adequate air circulation to
prevent the maximum temperature from being exceeded.

Cable Connector
---------------
The GoDrive 40/80S has a single 2 x 25 connector on 2mm centers for
power, data and SCSI Address.

The recommended mating connector on the system side is Dupont part
number 69764-050 or equivalent. To prevent the possibility of in-
correct installation, the hole of the mating connector that corres-
ponds to Pin 17 of J1 should be plugged. The maximum cable length is
12 inches.

Power Sequencing
----------------
The GoDrive 40/80S hard disk drive requires no power sequencing --
either OFF or ON. Applying or removing power during drive operation
does not cause data to be lost or corrupted -- with the possible
exception that data may be lost or corrupted in the sector being
written at the time of a power loss. During power-on or power-off,
the drive can sustain the shorting out or opening up of either
voltage or return line.

Although the GoDrive 40/80S hard disk drive requires no power
sequencing, Quantum recommends that if a controlled power down is
available from the system (e.g., in a system with an auto resume
feature), a STOP command be issued to the drive prior to the removal
power.

General Description
-------------------
Quantum's GoDrive 40S and 80S hard disk drives are part of a family
of high performance. 2.5 inch form factor hard disk drives manu-
factured to meet the highest product-quality standards. GoDrive hard
disk drives use non-removable, 2.5 inch rigid disks.

Features

SCSIADR - SCSI Address (Byte 3, Bits 2-0):
When SSID (bit 3 of byte 3) is set to one, SCSIADR determines the
drive's SCSI ID. When chaning the SCSI ID with the MODE SELECT
command, the SCSI ID will change immediately. If at initial power
on, the SSID bit is set to one - that is, if this bit's previous
setting was saved on the disk - the SCSIADR bit will determine the
drive's SCSI ID. The default is zero.

Defect Management
-----------------
The format of the GoDrive 40/80S allocates one sector per cylinder
as a spare. In the factory, the media is scanned for defects. If a
sector on a cylinder is found to be defective, the sector's address
is added to the drive's defect list. Sectors physically subsequent to
the defective sectors are assigned logical block addresses such that
a sequential ordering of logical blocks results. This inline sparing
technique is employed in an attempt to eliminate throughput
reduction resulting from a single defective sector on a cylinder.

Should more than one sector be found to be defective on a cylinder,
the in-line sparing approach is applied to the first sector only.
The remaining defective sectors are replaced with the nearest
available spare sectors on nearby cylinders. This assignment of
additional replacement sectors from nearby cylinders rather than a
central pool of spare sectors is an attempt to minimize the
mechanical motion required to obtain the replacement sector. This
results in the minimization of throughput reduction due to multiple
defective sectors on a cylinder.

Defects known as grown defects can occur in the field. If a defective
sector is encountered, the sector is reallocated by the algorithm
used in the factory to allocate the sectors found defective after
the first defective sector on a cylinder. That is, in-line sparing
to maintain the sequential nature of LBAs is not performed with grown
defects.

Sectors are considered to contain grown defects if the double burst
ECC algorithm must be applied in an attempt to recover the desired
data. If the double burst ECC algorithm was not successful, the
erroneous data is stored in the newly allocated sector, and a flag is
set in the data ID field; this causes the GoDrive to report an ECC
error each time the sector is read until the sector is rewritten.

Air Filtration
--------------
The GoDrive Series hard disk drives are Winchster-type drives. The
heads fly very close to the media surface, with a nominal flying
height of 4.5 microinches. Therefore, it is essential that the air
circulating within the drive be kept free of paticles. Quantum
assembles the drive in a Class-100, purified air environment, then
seals the drive with a metal cover. When the drive is in use, the
rotation of the disks forces the air inside the drive through an
internal filter.

Each signal driven by the GoDrive 40/80S hard disk drive has
the following output characteristics:

- False (signal deassertion) = 2.5 to 5.25 volts DC

Each signal from the host to the GoDrive 40/80S hard disk
drive must have the following characteristics, as measured at the
drive:

- True (signal assertion) = 0.0 to 0.8 volts DC

- False (signal deassertion) = 2.5 to 5.25 volts DC

The drive uses a 40-pin SCSI-bus and DC power connector -- providing
a single-ended, unshielded connection. All signals are asserted at
the low level. Pin 17 is not connected and serves as a key to reduce
the possibility of incorrect installation.

Terminator Power
----------------
The GoDrive 40/80S hard disk drive supplies terminator power through
a Schottky diode and a 1-amp fuse with the the following
characteristics:

The Quantum Fireball was a brand of 3.5-inch hard disk drives made by Quantum Corporation from 1995 to 2001. The first models in the series were 5400 RPM and came in 0.54 and 1.08 GB capacities,[1] while the Quantum Fireball Plus was known for being Quantum's first 7200 RPM Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) hard drive. There were sixteen different models of the Quantum Fireball, with the last being the LCT 20.

Fireball (original)[edit]

This generation of Quantum Fireball drives was launched in mid-1995 and offered 0.54 and 1.08 GB capacities. In 1996, capacities were increased to 0.64 and 1.28 GB. They had one or two platters, an IDE or SCSI interface and a 5400 RPM spindle speed.

Fireball TM[edit]

Released in 1997, this series of drives was positioned as a low-end model. With a 4500 RPM spindle speed and sporting a new design, these drives were originally available in 1.08 and 2.1 GB capacities with up to two platters; later models were available in capacities of up to 3.8 GB with three plattes.SCSI model TM 211 OS with 1.9 GB

Fireball ST[edit]

In 1997, Quantum released the Fireball ST. Notable for its high performance as well as being the first hard drive with an ATA-4 interface (SCSI models were also available), this series of hard drives were available in 1.6, 2.1, 3.2, 4.3, 5.1 and 6.4 GB capacities, with one, two or four platters, and a 5400 RPM spindle speed.

Fireball SE[edit]

1998 saw the release of the Fireball SE. This series improved upon the Fireball ST by having higher platter capacities and data transfer rates, while having the same cache size, spindle speed and drive interface as the Fireball ST. These drives were available in ATA-4 and SCSI interfaces with capacities up to 8.4 GB with four platters. These were Quantum's last Fireball drives available with a SCSI interface.

Fireball EL[edit]

In 1998, the Fireball EL was the first Fireball drive with an ATA-5 interface. This model had the spiral-shaped breather hole on the top cover. It quadrupled the Fireball SE's cache to 512 KB, while still having a 5400 RPM spindle speed. These drives were available in 2.5, 5.1, 7.6 and 10.3 GB capacities with up to four platters.

Fireball EX[edit]

By the end of 1998, Quantum launched the Fireball EX. This series increased the platter capacities of the Fireball EL by about 25%; capacities of 3.2, 5.1, 6.7, 10.4 and 12.7 GB with up to four platters were available. Aside from increased capacities, the specifications were the same as the Fireball EL.

Fireball CR[edit]

Launched in 1999, the Fireball CR series increased the platter capacities of the Fireball EL by about 33%; capacities of 4.3, 6.4, 8.4 and 12.7 GB with up to three platters were available. The cache, spindle speed and interface were the same as the Fireball EX.

Fireball CX[edit]

Launched in late 1999, the Fireball CX was Quantum's first hard drive with GMR heads. While having the same interface and spindle speed as the Fireball CR, the capacities available were 6.4, 10.2, 13 and 20.4 GB with up to three platters. (Shipped with the iMac G3 in late 1999)

Fireball Plus models[edit]

Fireball Plus KA[edit]

The Fireball Plus KA, launched in 1999, was known for being Quantum's first 7200 RPM hard drive, while still having 512 KB of cache and an ATA-5 interface. It was available in 6.1, 9.4, 13.2 and 18.2 GB capacities with up to four platters.

Fireball Plus KX[edit]

Launched in 1999, this series increased the capacities of the KA to 6.4, 10.2, 13.6, 20.5 and 27.3 GB while still having up to four platters. It had the same cache, interface and spindle speed as the KA.

Fireball Plus LM[edit]

Launched in early 2000, this series increased the cache size to 2 MB while still having the ATA-5 interface. It was available in 10, 15, 20 and 30 GB capacities with up to three platters.

Fireball Plus AS[edit]

Launched later in 2000, this was Quantum's first hard drive to feature fluid dynamic bearings and an ATA-6 interface. It had a 2 MB cache [2] and was available in 10.2, 20, 30, 40 and 60 GB capacities with up to three platters.

Fireball LCT models[edit]

Quantum launched the LCT line in 1999. LCT stands for 'low-cost technology.'

LCT 8[edit]

Launched in late 1999, it had a 512 KB cache,[3] 5400 RPM spindle speed, and an ATA-5 interface. It was available in 4.3, 8.4, 13, 17.3 and 26 GB capacities with up to three platters.

LCT 10[edit]

Launched in early 2000, it had the same spindle speed, cache and interface as the LCT 8. Capacities available were 5.1, 10.2, 15, 20.4 and 30 GB with up to three platters. Some LCT 10 drives had a reliability issue: the circuit board had an integrated circuit that burned out, making the drive unusable.

LCT 15[edit]

In mid-2000, Quantum released the LCT 15. It lowered the spindle speed to 4400 RPM, but still had 512 KB of cache and an ATA-5 interface. Capacities available were 7.5, 15, 20.4 and 30 GB with up to two platters.

LCT 20[edit]

Launched later in 2000, this was the last Fireball LCT series. It had 128 KB of cache, an ATA-6 interface and a 4500 RPM spindle speed. Capacities available were 10, 20, 30 and 40 GB with up to two platters.
